Access to Machines

Computing Labs

The AT level 3 Computing Lab is now closed. Level 5 will provide an open access lab with around 110 DICE machines, MSc common room and secure locker room, and supporting facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The ITO and Librarian will move to level 5 at the end of January. This new lab will have around 110 DICE machines and will replace both the AT3 lab and the labs lost in the fire at South Bridge. Currently (5th January) there are around 50 machines installed on Level5. These machines are available to all users, but those with scheduled sessions have priority. We are continuing to install extra machines there as quickly as we can.

The Informatics computing labs at JCMB (70 machines) are also open to all users.

Remote Logins

As well as ssh.inf.ed.ac.uk, the additional machines gateway.inf.ed.ac.uk and bannocks.inf.ed.ac.uk have been set up to allow remote ssh and xdm logins. See the FAQ section on Remote Logins for more details.

Laptops & ADSL

We intend to provide a small number of DICE laptops to be borrowed by staff. These machines will NOT be available to students, contrary to what some people have heard. Sorry.

ADSL costs may be paid to ex-SB staff to enable them to work from home. If you would find this essential then contact Gordon Duckett.

Access to Files

The lost home directories have now been restored. If you need something restored or are still in difficulties with your account please contact Support.

Temporary Home Directories

Temporary home directories were made for students who lost them in the fire. The temporary home directories can be accessed at /amd/partition/dai4/username.
