Aims and objectives

This course aims to introduce and illustrate the distinctive methods of each of these approaches. It is both philosophical and practical: we will show that familiar, everyday communication is not as simple as it appears, and illustrate how the different disciplines may help our understanding of some challenging and often surprising phenomena. By the end of the course, you will:

• be aware of the perspectives and methods necessary for understanding human communication,
• be familiar with simple models of human language and with some of the information technology that can be derived from such models,
• be aware of the role of complex reasoning in human communication, and the difficulties this implies for future IT systems,
• appreciate similarities and differences between modalities such as language and graphics.
