DICE FC3 (Fedora Core 3) upgrade progress

This summer (2005), we will be upgrading the DICE platform from Redhat 9 to Fedora Core 3 (FC3). This page will be used to report progress on the upgrade.

The following timetable explains what will be upgraded and when :- FC3 timeplan

Documentation

Test machines

As indicated on the above timetable, a test FC3 machine will be installed, early April, at each site so that users can become familiar with FC3 and start porting their software.

These machines should be used at the console only. If you need to access an FC3 box from your current desktop you should ssh into lobster.

Please note: there is a backwards compatability issue with certain "dot" files which means that it is inadvisable to share home directories between RH9 and FC3. We are working on a solution to this problem in time for deployment in early June.

Meanwhile, on the test FC3 desktops, users will see a separate FC3 home directory (/home/user); normal DICE home directories can be accessed via the path /nethome/user.

Work involved

Upgrading the DICE platform involves a lot of work for the COs (as well as work for users porting their software). We are using bugzilla to record dependencies and track progress - the master bugzilla entry for the upgrade is here. We also have a Wiki to aid development.
