AdAPTIVE Learning Environments UG4/MSc 2010-2011

Assessed assignment 3 (MSc/MINF Level 11 ONLY)

Updated Thursday March 8th 2012

You should spend about 12 hours on each assignment  (maximum 16 hours). Coursework accounts for 30% of the credit available, the examination is worth 70%. Two coursework assignments are set for 4th year  (level 10) students and 3 for MSc/MINF (level 11) students.

The deadline for submission is: 4pm Friday 30th March

The third assignment is related to the seminar and requires you to write an essay on the influence of classic systems on current learning environment development and research.

Select one of the classic systems or approaches presented in the seminars, or one of the others described in the lectures (this does not have to be the one your group presented). Those covered in the seminars were:

    Guidon         Logo          Lisp Tutor          BUGGY/DEBUGGY/IDEBUGGY
    Sophie         Steamer     Menotutor         Cognitive Apprenticeship

Your essay should address the following:

  1. Briefly describe the classic system that you have chosen.
  2. What research followed on from this, either by the original research group or others?
  3. Give examples of how this system has influenced more recent research and development of learning technology.
  4. Evaluate the contribution of this classic system to the field.

Note that in some cases this may require a little detective work......

References for ASSIGNMENT:

The seminars page will have the presentations made by the various groups, as they become available, and the related references. The readings page has a number of references for the classic systems. A good starting point is texts such as Wenger (1987) and Woolf (2009) and the Nkambou et al (2010) text.

Some suggestions on how to go about this:
 - as said above, see what various textbooks say
 - look at what the authors of the classic system did more recently (e.g. what did Bev Woolf do after menotutor?)
 - see who cited the classic work and whether what they did builds on it
 - look at the topic and issues addressed and search on them (following Steamer, who else developed configurable interfaces for industrial process?)
 - search for systems with similar names (e.g. logo - starlogo)

You should not spend more than about 16 hours on this assignment. Your report should be 4-6 pages (c. 2-3,000 words) long. Note it can be longer if you wish.....

Submit the assignment either by hand to the ITO office, or using the submit program (the latter is preferred).

   submit  ale1 3 filename-of-your-submission.pdf

where 3 is the assignment number.
In the latter case your submission should be a .pdf file. Put your name and/or matric number in the submission.
