Instructions for Installing an Admin PC.

NB. November 2004 These instructions are for use with John's installation image cds and are about to become obsolete when the new managed desktop goes into production.

Partition the Disk

USB mouse: when using the drive image and partition magic programs move the mouse very slowly, or it'll go mad.

You will need 4 floppies and 4 cds -- Partition Magic and Drive Image.

To start boot from partition magic (2 disks - you'll be prompted for the second) and create the following partitions:

47Mb hidden FAT

14998.6Mb active FAT32 (as close as you can get to 15Gb with these sector sizes)

anything else you want - some data drive perhaps?

Label them DELLUTILITY, SYSTEM and DATA (and on some machines OTHER) if you want consistency.

Then boot from drive image floppies and insert the dellutility cd. This has boot information and some very useful diag tools.

Chose to restore an image - the only one on the cd - to the 47Mb hidden drive

Then the same for the first one of the main system (cd labelled Admin 1/3), you'll be prompted for the cds in order.

N.B. these dos based programs aren't perfect - you sometimes just have to retry (about 1 in 10 or so - so you can live with it).

If you want to change something after you have installed the image,
Right Click on My Computer -> Manage -> Disk Management
In Tools -> Folder Management, you can hide/unhide folders.

reboot!

Change the name on the pc. Control Panel -> System

TCP/IP Network Connections -> Properties -> TCP/IP Properties choose automatic for IP and DNS.

The image is getting a bit long in the tooth and needs some video drivers upgraded in the new 270s.
