Minutes of Cross-Division Meeting, 26th July, 2000

  1. Attendance List

  2. Apologies for absence

    • Ken Dawson
    • Rosemary Soutar
    • Alastair Scobie

  3. Matters Arising

    1. Informatics newsgroups

Ross Hamilton will circulate an outline for newsgroup strategy (hierarchy), with a request for comment & feedback.

This has now been put on hold following Ross's resignation. It is now hoped that he will be able to put together a document describing the current status of the news hierarchy proposal and associated dustribution mechanisms.

Ross has already left, and there is some uncertainty about the state of his leaving documentation. Paul Anderson will check with Alastair Scobie.

      [Action: PA]

    2. Clarification of VLAN support from EUCS

George Ross will continue to push EUCS on behalf of Informatics.

A further e-mail or other exchange is hoped for, in an attempt to bring this to a resolution.

      [Action: GDMR]

    3. Access [via Perl] to Divisional Database

Access will be provided to a sub-set of data only, that which has been defined as "public" - and this data will be exported to relevant users/sites.

Ken Dawson was reported to have implemented a test script, and experimentation is continuing.

A suggested list of fields (sub-set of data to be exported) has been agreed by CEG - this will include a UID field.

The unification of UIDs will require action at each site. This will be co-ordinated by Tim Colles.

Tim reported that about 100 UIDs need to be changed, and implementation of this is awaited. Tim will pursue this. A policy and mechanism to ensure the continued consistency of UID allocation will need to be devised and arranged.

Tim Colles reported that the unification of UIDs was progressing, but awaited completion and feedback from those involved.

      [Action: TC]

    4. TeX

Craig Strachan announced that site versions of TeX & would be upgraded to tetex 1.0.6, so that a consistent version would be available across the Division. This is already installed, but not the default - this is to be arranged.

A date has been arranged for this, 17th July, to be co-ordinated by Craig. Some discussion with Simon Wilkinson is required with respect to the Linux setup. The layout at each site will be consistent, and there will be centralised distribution of updates for packages, document classes etc.

Craig Strachan reported that tetex 1.0.6 is now the default at all sites. A problem with xdvi was still outstanding, as were some other minor problems. Processing, however, appeared to be OK.

      [Action: CMS]

Paul Anderson queried the policy of creating a core module (style file) if there was more than one request for it - but Craig maintained that keeping track of source requests and module history would be possible and practicable.

Jeremy Olsen mentioned that user texmf trees could be integrated into the new setup.

  4. Any relevant Responsible Person reports

    CO/CSO Posts:

Jeremy Olsen reported that an offer had been made the the CO (KB) post, and also for the CO (BP) and CSO (BP) posts.

  5. Tabling of CEG Minutes

Jeremy reported that Planning & Resources Committee has revised the allocation to UKP 250,000 for the year 2000/2001, which restores it to previous levels, rather than being a real increase.

  6. VMware presentation by Paul Anderson

An interesting and informative talk and demonstration was given by Paul, showing the application of VMware as a tool for the supporting and working in a mixed platform environment.

  7. AOB

Neil Brown gave a brief report of his trip to Amsterdam to attend a Windows conference.

  8. Date of Next Meeting
