Minutes of Cross-Division Meeting, 5th April 2000

  1. Attendance List

  2. Apologies for absence

    • Archie Howitt
    • Craig Strachan

  3. Matters Arising

    1. Informatics newsgroups

Propagation of site-specific newsgroups had been enabled, and further discussion will take place about a suitable Informatics newsgroup hierarchy.

      [Action: RAH]

    2. Clarification of VLAN support from EUCS

EUCS appear to be supporting VLANs, but only unofficially. It is understood that FCC will push for official support, as will GDMR on behalf of Informatics.

      [Action: GDMR]

    3. Access [via Perl] to Divisional Database

Access will be provided to a sub-set of data only, that which has been defined as "public" - and this data will be exported to relevant users/sites.

It was confirmed that use of this data is acceptable as long as "basic [Data Protection] principles" are adhered to.

The sub-set of data to be exported will be determined based on requests for particular fields, co-ordinated by KTD (requirements for QI will be dealt with by AJS)

      [Action: KTD]

    4. InfCOs Cross-Divisional meetings web hierarchy

      (Local) access restrictions lifted

      [No Further Action]

  4. Any relevant Responsible Person reports

There were none. It was noted, however, that Minutes of CEG should be presented as a standing item.

It was also noted that a bid for a Beowulf cluster has been submitted, and - if successful - the equipment should arrive in September/October.

  5. Consideration of Current Issues

    • Division Mail Server

It was reported that the Division mail server (currently hosted on an IPX) will be moved to a dual-CPU SPARCstation 10 (CS have offered a dual-CPU SPARCstation 20 if required).

The possibility of an Informatics mail address space (similar to the Edinburgh mail address space) was raised, and will be discussed at a future meeting).

    • Printing Services

It was agreed that GDMR would distribute a packaged version of lprng (which is already installed at CS) to other Divisional sites at FH/SB (AI) and BP (ICCS), and that FH/SB would do the first installation (being shadowed by ICCS, who would do the next installation).

An installation for ANC at FH is to be arranged.

Using lprng, it will be possible to standardise on one printing technology, which will be the same across all sites - and will pave the way for cross-domain printing.

A contact person would be nominated at each site - Neil Brown has been named for FH/SB.

A contact at BP is to be decided upon

      [Action: JMHO]

  6. Presentation by AJS: "Privacy in Informatics"

Alastair gave a talk on the effect of current & pending data-protection & privacy legislation on the Division computing infrastructure (both current and proposed), in conjunction with University computing regulations, and the Division's intentions.

Unfortunately, this talk ran out of time, and it was decided that - given its importance - it should be re-presented at a future meeting (either as a regular meeting slot, or a special meeting), where it will include more detail on the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Bill.

    [Action: AJS]

  7. Items for discussion from CEG:

    There were none.

  8. A.O.B

JMHO announced the moves of CSTR to BP (from SB), and of ANC (from BP to FH).

  9. Date of Next Meeting

... is Wednesday, 3rd May - to be held at Buccleuch Place.

To avoid (as much as possible) clashes with other meetings, it was decided to make explicit the dates of forthcoming meetings. These are (for the current year):

    28th June
    26th July
    23rd August
