Informatics Fourth Year Honours Course Guide
Feedback, Complaints, Suggestions and Appeals

Constructive feedback on all aspects of the final year is always welcome. For students, the School of Informatics has organised the following feedback mechanisms.

Questionnaires:
These are issued for all courses and are anonymous. They are read by the course lecturer and the Course Organiser.
Student Representatives:
There are student representatives for each course and for each whole course. These are elected by and from the students concerned. The course representative is a member of the ITO's Teaching Committee, which meets twice a term. The representative will be asked to make a brief report on behalf of the class, so burning or just simmering issues should be passed on to them. Items for the agenda should be submitted to the Teaching Committee Secretary. All representatives are asked to write a report at the end of the coure.
Informal Meetings:
At the end of the course all students are invited to an informal discussion with the course organiser.

Informal comments and suggestions can be made by anyone to the course lecturers or the Course Organiser at any time. If students prefer their comments to be made anonymously they can be filtered through the student representatives.

All this feedback is fed to an annual course review meeting together with feedback from the external examiners and the Board of Examiners. Actions for change are noted and monitored by the Teaching Committee. The School must show that feedback has been obtained and acted upon. It is answerable to the periodic Quality Assessment procedure conducted by SHEFC.

If you have a complaint about something related to a course, your best action is first to consult your student representative, a relevant course lecturer or the Course Organiser, according to what is wrong. If these mechanisms are unsatisfactory, you should consult the Head of School.

It is possible to appeal against the decision of a board of examiners if there is substantial information which for good reason was not available when the decision was taken, or if the examination was conducted improperly. Any such appeal must be submitted in writing to the Secretary of the University as soon as possible and will not be considered if it arrives more than three months after the examination results were made available to you.

Your Director of Studies will be able to advise you about how to pursue a complaint or appeal that cannot be resolved by informal means.
