Plagiarism Policy

Students at the University of Edinburgh come from many different cultures and backgrounds and not all students will necessarily appreciate fully the nature of plagiarism nor the importance that the University attaches to its avoidance. To prevent any misunderstandings, we ask each student to read this declaration and to sign and return it to the ITO at the start of his or her degree programme.

Plagiarism is the act of copying or including in one's own work, without adequate acknowledgment, intentionally or unintentionally, the work of another, for one's own benefit.

The University of Edinburgh views any case of plagiarism extremely seriously, and is committed to ensuring that plagiarism is, wherever possible, both detected and dealt with appropriately.

When submitting major items of coursework, in particular the final year undergraduate project and MSc Dissertation, students are required to print off a copy of the Own Work Declaration, complete the form and include it with the submission. For each item of coursework to be submitted, the relevant course guide will indicate whether an Own Work Declaration will be required.
