Machine Learning Practical (MLP) 2017-18: Labs

Lab Notebooks

The lab material is available on GitHub at https://github.com/CSTR-Edinburgh/mlpractical. You do not require a github login to use this. Each new lab will correspond to a new branch in git.

See environment-set-up.md on the github for details about getting started.

Labs use iPython and Jupyter notebook. There are many Python/numpy tutorials on the web, I think that this is a good one: http://cs231n.github.io/python-numpy-tutorial/.

Solutions for each week's lab notebook will be included in the corresponding notebook in the branch you checkout with the following week's material.

• Setting up. Setting up your environment.
• Getting started in a lab. Instructions to get a branch for a new lab.
• Lab 1. Getting started and data providers.
• Lab 2. Single-layer networks and visualising trajectories in parameter space.
• Lab 3. Softmax, multi-layer networks, backprop, tanh, relu.
• Lab 4. Generalisation and overfitting.
• Lab 5. L1/L2 regularisation, and data augmentation.
• Lab 6. Dropout and maxout.
• Lab 7. Autoencoders.

Lab Sessions (semester 1)

You should attend one 1-hour scheduled lab session per week.
Labs will start in week 2 (week of Monday 25 September) and will take place in the Appleton Tower as follows:

• Monday 14:10-15:00, AT 5.05 West Lab
• Monday 15:10-16:00, AT 5.04 North Lab
• Tuesday 12:10-13:00, AT 5.04 North Lab
• Tuesday 13:10-14:00, AT 4.12
• Tuesday 14:10-15:00, AT 5.05 West Lab
• Thursday 13:10-14:00, AT 5.05 West Lab
• Thursday 14:10-15:00, AT 5.05 West Lab
• Thursday 15:10-16:00, AT 3.09
• Friday 10:00-10:50, AT 3.09
• Friday 11:10-12:00, AT 5.07
• Friday 12:10-13:00, AT 4.12

This doodle poll has dates for week 2, but you are signing up for the same time each week for the rest of the semester. Please note that a maximum of 36 people can sign up to for each lab time.
