Assignment

Please read the entire document carefully before starting work on it.

Some additional details are presented in these slides. In addition, material from the "Operating system support" chapter of Coulouris et al. may be helpful (this is chapter 7 of the 5th edition).

Sample inputs and outputs

We provide the the following files as samples of the input format for the assignment. You can use these to test your code for reading in the input format.

We also provide the following files as examples of possible correct outputs for the above sample inputs.

out1.txt
out2-updated.txt (old version of out2.txt)
out3.txt

Your solution is not required to duplicate the above outputs exactly; these outputs are intended only to illustrate one possible run of each of the inputs. Also, the inputs above are for illustration only; handling them correctly is no guarantee that your solution works, and we may test your solutions on other inputs that we will not make available in advance.

Due date

The due date is March 13, 2014 at 4pm. Any late coursework or extension requests must follow the School policy here and must be submitted as soon as possible to the ITO and your year organizer. The lecturers are not able to grant extensions themselves.

Submission

Programming part: Please put your code and any comments explaining how to run the code in either a single source file, or a directory.

Theory part: Please provide your solutions as a PDF file, with question numbers 1,2,3,4 clearly marked.

Submission will be made using the DICE submit command:

To submit your code please use the following command:
submit ds 1 filename
where filename is the name of your single source file. If you wish you may also put submit multiple source files by collecting them into a directory and setting filename to be the directory name.
To submit your written solutions to the theory questions, please use the following command
submit ds 2 solutions.pdf
where solutions.pdf is your PDF file containing solutions.

Return of coursework and feedback

Marks and feedback for your coursework are intended to be returned within 3 weeks from the submission date (following University guidelines).

April 3rd, 2014

We will try to return coursework within two weeks (meeting School guidelines) but because this is a large class we wish to allow extra time to ensure that we can give helpful feedback. We will also be happy to discuss the coursework (before or after the due date) in office hours or by appointment.
