This is the home page for the School of Informatics course "CNV: Computational Neuroscience of Vision", given by James A. Bednar in January-March 2009.
This course uses the Topographica neural simulator and the Computational Maps in the Visual Cortex book; see the topographica.org and computationalmaps.org web sites for more details on the simulator and book.
You will get a chance to run simulations of visual cortex development and function, and gain an understanding of what modeling can achieve, what it cannot, and how modeling can be done well. See the course for more details on the topics to be covered.
18 Sep 08: These pages will be updated regularly once the semester begins, so please check this page and the lecture notes page at least weekly for news. Be sure to refresh both pages in your browser before deciding there is no news.
12 Jan 09: We will meet Mondays and Thursdays in 24 Buccleuch Place, room 1.10.
16 Jan 09: Four MSc projects suitable for CNV students have been posted; see projects P155, P141, P142, and P162.
29 Jan 09: This news article published yesterday about the Brainbow mice illustrates a lot of points from the lecture today, about the importance of making sense of the mess of connections, and the importance of doing it in a single animal rather than across a population.
11 Feb 09: Class meets in IF-2.40 tomorrow instead, to start on Assignment 1.
12 Mar 09: Graduating students may be interested in this PhD studentship in colour and binocular vision in Julie Harris's lab at St. Andrews.
16 Mar 09: CNV students will probably be interested in the talk by Geoff Goodhill from 11-12pm tomorrow (17 Mar 09) in room 4.31/4.33 in the Informatics Forum.
