Seminars on the influence of classic systems on more recent research and system development

A number of lecture slots will be devoted to presentations on the influence of classic systems on current learning environment development and research. These will take place in weeks 8 and 9 (that is weeks beginning the 5th and 12th March). In each seminar slot, two classic systems, and their influence, will be presented. Course participants will be divided into 8 groups, and two groups will present in each seminar.

References for Seminars:

Each seminar will be split into two 25 minute sessions. One group will present in each session. Each group will focus on one classic system and the influence it has had. The readings page has a number of references for the classic systems. A good starting point is texts such as Wenger (1987) and Woolf (2009) and the Nkambou et al (2010) text.

2. Seminar instructions:

Meet as a group and decide how to divide up the research. You should all read some papers, and some of you may choose to read several. How you divide the work is up to the group.

Your seminar should address the following:

  1. Briefly describe the classic system that you have been assigned.
  2. What research followed on from this, either by the original research group or others?
  3. Give examples of how this system has influenced more recent research and development of learning technology.
  4. Evaluate the contribution of this classic system to the field.

Note that in some cases this may require a little detective work......

Some suggestions on this:
 - as said above, see what various textbooks say
 - look at what the authors of the classic system did more recently (e.g. what did Bev Woolf do after menotutor?)
 - see who cited the classic work and whether what they did builds on it
 - look at the topic and issues addressed and search on them (following Steamer, who else developed configurable interfaces for industrial process?)
 - search for systems with similar names (e.g. logo - starlogo)

You should work on the presentation together and decide how you will present this to the whole group. You will have a slot of 20 minutes to do so. You may decide that all students will not present, give the short time and the group size. However all students should contribute to the work for the presentation and content.
