Remote Access to Restricted Web Pages

Some Informatics web pages are restricted so that only local users can gain access. (For advice on how to do this for your own web pages, see the FAQ). This page gives guidance on how local users can gain access to restricted web pages when not on a local machine.

Pages restricted to ed.ac.uk access
These are normally visible only from computers within the University of Edinburgh. However, access to such pages can be gained from outside machines using the University's proxy cache or VPN services.
Pages restricted to inf.ed.ac.uk access
The School of Informatics is working on remote web authentication services which may help here, but they are not yet ready for use. In the meantime, possible courses of action include using ssh to login to an Informatics computer and running a web browser from there, or contacting the page's author and asking for the inf.ed.ac.uk restricted to be relaxed to ed.ac.uk (thus allowing use of the University's proxy cache or VPN services).
