Information for current:

Informatics Web Service

The MAIN Informatics web server uses technology to enforce publication of standards compliant HTML, this is to ensure the pages are as browser independent as possible. This technology is used for the www.inf.ed.ac.uk service, along with a number of institute servers. Official teaching and administrative information should be hosted on a www.inf.ed.ac.uk URL .

There is also the Homepages Web Service, for personal pages which does not enforce HTML validation, and provides a distinct URL separate from official Informatics content.

Document publishing
Information for users (typically staff) wishing to publish documents on the centrally managed server. We use a combination of CVS and HTTP based publishing techniques, these pages contain details of how to use the service, along with how to apply for an account on it.

Remote access to restricted pages
How to get access from remote machines to pages which are viewable only by local users.

Homepages Web Service

All Informatics users are able to publish personal pages on the http://homepages.inf.ed.ac.uk web server.

Wiki Services

Informatics runs its own general purpose Wiki service (currently using TWiki 4.3.1) available as wiki.inf.ed.ac.uk (which includes TWiki documentation and local introductory information). Note that the request & creation of a new WikiWeb is limited to staff and PhDs, although any Informatics user can edit pages (given the required permissions).

There is also a new Central Wiki Service. For more information, including details on how to reguest wiki, see their support documentation. It is preferred if new wiki requests are hosted on this central service.

External collaborator access is available on wiki.inf.ed.ac.uk via an iFriend account, and on https://www.wiki.ed.ac.uk via an EASE Friend account.

Web CMS

We now have a general purpose Web Content Management Service too, wcms.inf.ed.ac.uk. It is based on Zope/Plone, and does support external collaborator access via iFriend accounts.

Slightly more details are available here.

Web FAQ

A general web FAQ, with some common questions and solutions.

Legacy ex-Department Web Services

The ex-department (DCS, DAI and CogSCI) web servers will ideally die off over (a long) time. The first step was to move them off the old legacy hardware and host the sites on DICE managed hardware. All active web content should be hosted on .inf.ed.ac.uk services.

www.dcs.ed.ac.uk
Is now hosted on a DICE server. See this document for details off the transition, what changed and what old DCS users needed to do.
www.dai.ed.ac.uk
Since the South Bridge fire, this has been hosted on DICE hardware.
www.cogsci.ed.ac.uk
Is now hosted on a DICE server.

The vague plan is to freeze the content of these sites, so that content on URLS beginning www.dcs|dai|cogsci.ed.ac.uk will no longer be updateable by users. Thus encouraging migration of content to .inf.ed.ac.uk URLs. At this point the computing staff can arrange for redirects from legacy URLs to the new inf.ed.ac.uk content.
