Brief Description of Work:  Moving heavy computers

HAZARD IDENTIFICATION: Identify all the hazards; evaluate the risks (low / medium / high); describe all existing control measures and identify any further measures required. Specific hazards should be assessed on a separate risk assessment form and cross-referenced with this document. Back injuries

  1. The lifting operation should be carried out by 2 persons when necessary.
  2. Anyone involved in this activity should have manual handling training.
  3. Rest periods should be introduced if necessary.
  4. A trolley should be used where possible.

Slipping/tripping

All persons involved must have read and understood Part Two: Section 4.7 (Manual Handling of Loads) of the University Health and Safety Policy at: http://www.safety.ed.ac.uk/policy/part2/part2.shtm

Persons with existing or previous muscular/skeletal injuries and expectant mothers must not undertake lifting operations.

The lifting operation to be carried out by 2 persons when required.

Persons who undertake this activity should be trained in manual handling techniques.* 

The computer should be packed in its box / packing case if possible.

Operatives must ensure that the route to be taken is free of obstructions/tripping hazards. All doors should be opened and wedged if necessary.

While moving computers between locations it may be beneficial to stop for brief rests.

Once the move is complete, all wedges should be removed and all doors properly closed.
