EPSRC have commissioned a review of computer science research in the UK. For that purpose a panel consisting of Professor Juris Hartmanis, Professor Susan Davidson and Professor Ray Perrault, accompanied by Mike Rodd from IEE, will be visiting Informatics at Edinburgh on 26 June 2001.

"The Standing and Potential of Computer Science Research in the UK"
To report on the standing and potential of Computer Science Research in the UK and provide a comparison with computer science research internationally.
a) The study will cover all computer science research undertaken in
UK universities;
b) The study will assess the current standing of computer science research
and its likely impact on the UK Science Base and on the nation's wealth
and well-being;
c) The study will draw on existing data, international assessments,
and site visits;
d) The study will result in a report to be published and made available
to the sponsors and the UK computer science community.
For the purposes of this study, the coverage of Computer Science includes the theoretical and practical study of the following: adaptive systems, algorithms, artificial intelligence, computer architecture and engineering, computer graphics, computer vision, databases, dependable systems, distributed systems, formal methods, high performance computing, human-computer interaction, information retrieval, information systems, machine learning, multimedia, networks and communications, operating systems, pattern recognition, programming languages, software engineering, speech and language technology.
