- Abstract:
Developments in modern configuration tools have been hampered by a lack of standards. Users with sufficient resources have developed tools for their own use, but these virtually never inter-operate, and rarely attract the necessary effort and confidence for them to be widely used outside of their development organisations.
This paper proposes a simple level of interoperation which should allow independent development of ``higher-level'' configuration manipulation tools. Such tools would be able to make use of new and existing tools for the expensive (in terms of development) deployment operations.
