Arrival information for postgraduate students

You should plan to arrive in Edinburgh a day or two before the start date shown on your formal offer of admission (the letter sent to you by the College of Science & Engineering).

Registration & Matriculation

On arrival your first priority should be to register formally with the University, this is the first step in matriculating (the official administrative act of becoming a student of university). You must register in person at the university Registry in Old College. You will need to take your unconditional offer of admission and your offer of funding (if you have one). Note that you will not be able to register before the start date shown on your offer of admission.

Please also note if your offer of admission is conditional you will not be able to register. You must first contact the College of Science and Engineering and arrange to satisfy the conditions of your offer and obtain an unconditional offer.

Induction

After registering with the University you must then register with the School of Informatics to allow us to confirm your attendance (the second step in matriculating) and receive a brief introduction to the School of Informatics. Please contact the graduate school office to make an appointment. 

As well as confirming your attendance we will be able to:

• provide you with a DICE computer username and password if you do not already have one;
• show you the desk you will be working at and issue  a key for the room you will be studying in; and
• issue you with the first installment of your scholarship (if this is managed via the Graduate School).

Further assistance

The International Office provides help and guidance for all new and continuing students who come to Edinburgh from outwith the UK.  If you are an international student you should definitely check out their helpful information for new students and their pre-arrival guide. The International Office can also give advice or assitance with opening a bank account.
