European Masters in Informatics (EUMI)

This is a two-year Masters course sponsored by the EC Programme Erasmus Mundus.

It is offered jointly by the University of Edinburgh and two other major European universities:

If you take this course you will become a professional who understands advanced techniques, tools, and methodologies in the field of Informatics, and is able to put this knowledge to practice in the key application domains. Your experience of studying in two different universities, in two different countries, will put you in a good position to find employment with major international companies or in the academia. Visit our careers page for examples of career paths and employers.

Programme Content

Net-Centric/Media Informatics
This specialization covers all aspects of informatics related to the design, implementation and analysis of distributed, ubiquitous information and computing systems. This area covers a wide range of topics, ranging from network architectures and communication infrastructures to techniques for the design and analysis of distributed knowledge, media applications, intelligent human computer interfaces and distributed web-service applications. Specialisms by University

Life-Science Informatics
This area of specialisation will prepare professionals for research or employment at the intersection of the study of life science (biology, neuroscience, cognitive science) and computing. Students will take basic courses on the fundamentals of biology and/or cognitive science, advanced courses studying the application of computer science and courses on techniques for the analysis of structural and behavioural aspects of biological and cognitive systems.

Embedded Systems Informatics

This specialization introduces the fundamental principles underlying the theory and practical design and implementation of embedded systems. Moreover, it allows students to put these principles into practice in applications in the area of control systems (e.g., controllers for automotive systems or industrial plants) and to ambient intelligence applications (e.g., domotics or sensorsnetworks).

Programme Structure

The Masters Course lasts two years and carries 120 points in the European credit transfer system.  The course is taught in English and covers domains that, being emergent, rapidly evolving, and of growing impact on society, require specialised competencies not covered by more traditional degree programs.

Course content is grouped into the specialist areas listed in the programme content section above. Each specialist area is taught jointly by two of the partner Universities and, as a student, you will spend a year at each university. One university will act as your main university where you will spend the initial part of your studies and where you will be based while writing your thesis.

Upon the successful completion of the course you will be awarded a double degree, consisting of a degree from each of the two visited universities. The awarded degrees correspond to:

Studentships

A number of 21 scholarships worth 21.000 EUR per year are available to students from outside the EU only, funded by the European Commission wihin the Erasmus Mundus programme.  Some of these scholarships will be specifically set aside for students from Asia.

Sponsorship is currently not available for students from the UK/EU but please consult our sponsorship page for possible sources of funding.
