Edinburgh student wins 2007 young software engineer of the year award

Hui Sun receiving his award

Hui Sun won the Young Software Engineer of the Year 2007 for BioMobile, a software tool for face recognition for a mobile phone, which he developed for his fourth year project supervised by Gillian Hayes.

Hui developed a machine learning method for learning the owner's face compared with a database of other faces, and then for recognising it again later. He could deal with face images taken under various lighting conditions and was able to make the recognition program small enough to fit in the phone's limited memory. He also made a graphical interface with which to view the output of tests of his software on large face databases. The application is intended to be used as a safety feature allowing phone access only to the recognised user.
