Whither Informatics? Computation, Communication, Cognition

Abstract

Informatics is the study of the structure, behaviour, and interactions of natural and artificial computational systems.

Informatics studies the representation, processing, and communication of information in natural and artificial systems. The central notion is the transformation of information - whether by computation or communication, whether by organisms or artifacts.

In this talk, I'll try to set the scene for the Jamboree by sketching one view, my view, of the intellectual landscape we have to explore. I'll then discuss one or two examples of questions posed by the new perspective of Informatics.
