REQUESTING A VISITOR ACCOUNT

What is a visitor ?

"A visitor is anyone who is working or studying on University premises but who is not registered either by HR on Main Payroll, or by Registry on the student systems".

There is now a revised system in place for procuring visitor Unique UserNames (UUNs) and subsequent account creation. The May 2005 edition of BITs contained an article on the Visitor Registration Service which should now be used to create a UUN for all visitors to the University who require access to any EUCS service. The article can be found at: May 2005 BITs

Your visitor will then be able to register with the EASE authentication service and use the EASE credentials to register for the Wireless Service. More on the visitor registration system can be found at: Visitor Registration

If your visitor is going to need access to any of our resources, then a central University account must be created first. Only then can Computer Support staff at Informatics create a DICE account for them. A DICE account is needed even if the visitor is using a centrally managed Windows machine.

The steps you need to take are as follows:

Please note that Computer Support staff do not have authorisation to use the on-line application form so requests for visitor accounts must first be made through admin staff.

Please ensure that you give as much notice as possible about visitors. None of the above steps take particularly long but guidelines agreed by Service Managers indicate that a 24 hour turn around for the DICE account creation is acceptable. A 24 hour period should also be expected to allow for the entry to be made in the VRS and then approved by a Service Manager. More information on Computing Guidelines can be found here.

Should you require us to provide a machine for your visitor, then please give us as much notice as possible. We are only obliged to provide all centrally funded staff and students with machines but we may have some spare machines available that they can borrow, particularly if their stay is short.
