Tutoring and Demonstrating Jobs
Each year, the School is able to offer a wide range of part-time
tutoring
and demonstrating jobs to students who are currently studying at the
University
of Edinburgh, or who have recently graduated from here. We are very
appreciative
of the efforts of those who take up these posts. For the School, it
means
that tutorial group sizes can be kept reasonable and for some classes,
makes
the difference between being able to run tutorials and not. These
benefits
are passed on to the students of course. We also hope that you, as a
tutor,
can benefit intellectually as well as financially from the exercise.
There
is nothing like having to teach something as a spur to understanding it
and
perhaps opening new perspectives on your research.
Doing work of this kind provides a valuable taster (and CV enhancer)
for
those of you who seek a career in academia and is a valuable
'transferable skill' for those of you whose future lies elsewhere.
These pages outline the appointment and payment processes and give
details of the jobs which are available.
The TLA Centre and the School of Informatics provide the following
training
materials and training courses. New tutors and demonstrators are
required
to attend a relevant training course for which you will be paid a the
demonstrator
rate.
