AI Programming in Java

     Type (Tut/Demo/Other...): Tutors

Time in Year: First Term, weeks 2 through 10.
Depending on circumstances, one or two extra markers may later be
needed to help with the assignments (second half of the term),
though I would hope to fill any such needs from the pre-existing
bunch of tutors, who will be paid separately for marking.

     Number of Posts: 4

Description: A good knowledge of Java basics is required, and an appreciation
of the differences between Java and C++ would be a distinct
advantage. We will be using Java 1.4 though we will not be making
significant use of features of either 1.3 or 1.4.

Students are not expected to be computer specialists: the main
aim of the module is to equip those without significant previous
programming skills with a tool that will be useful to them for
                  their summer project work.

The syllabus is currently available through the M.Sc. web page at
                  http://www.informatics.ed.ac.uk/teaching/modules/aipj.html.
Although I intend to touch on all the topics listed, the module
emphasis will be on understanding and applying the basic concepts
of Java in a reasonably principled manner. This will include
Threads and (a minimal amount of) AWT and Swing. It will also
encourage documenting programs and using coding conventions.

Tutorials will be held in the South Bridge undergraduate terminal
room C1, so there will be easy access to workstations.
At present, sessions are scheduled for 1 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays,
                  4 p.m. on Tuesdays, 2 p.m. on Wednesdays, and 3 p.m. on Fridays.

Total hours: 1 hour tutoring + 1 hour extra preparation per week
(paid at demonstrator rate) for eight weeks, possibly nine.
