Type (Tut/Demo/Other ...): Teaching Assistant
Time in Year: Term 1
Number of Posts: 1
Description:
Introduction
to Computational Linguistics is an introduction to the theory and
practice of computational approaches to natural language
understanding and
generation. We will investigate solutions to problems
in syntatic analysis
(bottom-up parsing, chart parsing, probabilistic and finite
state parsing),
semantic interpretation, discourse and reference, and
dialogue. There is a
vacancy for teaching assistant. If you are interested,
please apply as soon as
possible.
The Teaching assistant (TA) will support the instructor
with a variety of
duties to help the smooth running of the course. These
duties include a
mixture of tutoring and marking, and assistance with practicals.
The teaching
assistant will also help the instructor by preparing some
of the course
materials: for example, setting practical exercises and
writing tutorial
exercise sheets and solutions. The exact duties will depend
on the
preferences and aptitudes of the TA, and what needs to
be done. Teaching
assistants are expected to have a close involvement and
keen interest in the
running of the course. They should have a strong academic
background in
Computational Linguistics, and, ideally, be competent
programmers in Lisp,
Prolog, and Perl. An enthusiasm for teaching is an essential
prerequisite: the
course lecturer would like to work closely with the TA
and encourage her/his
ideas and input to improve the course while it runs.
